Mei Yan, a girl studying in America, returned to China to complete her doctoral research into Confucius. Thus this play unfolds from two threads: A. Life and main ideas of Confucius; B. Everything occurring in modern times around the leading female character, Mei Yan in the course of research as well as her reflections on spirit of Confucius.

A. Biography of Confucius

In the last years of Spring and Autumn Era amidst the flame of frequent wars when the princes vied for the supremacy。

Confucius, born in Qufu, Shandong Province as a descendant of noble family in the decayed State of Song, lived an impoverished life with his mother. Fond of rehearsal of sacrificial ceremonies, he dreamed about restoration of benevolent rules and social institutions at the period of Duke Zhou to realize one world where everybody lives and works in peace and contentment.

As a youngster, he was attacked and mocked by other kids for his crazy about rehearsal of rituals. Even at the age of seven, he was fooled and chased by fierce dogs just because of his unauthorized participation in the banquet held by Ji’s family, influential officials of Lu State on his way to seek his father for the burial of deceased mother. In the eyes of ordinary people, he seemed eccentric and could not keep pace with times. For livelihood, he herded horses and served as a driver and stock keeper. Despite all that, he, blessed with diligent and studious character, traveled far and wide to study under masters from all walks of life, and gradually grasped “Six Arts” necessary for noblemen of the time in the end. Furthermore, by virtue of his integrity and extensive knowledge, he won appreciation and trust from numerous workmen and dignitaries.

However, things went athwart that in Lu State, the imperious officials were in power, and the prince and Ji’s family of great influence initiated successive bloody fights for throne, thus bringing scourges and chaos to Lu State time after time. Yang Hu, the butler of Ji’s Mansion, was attracted by Confucius’s ability, insight and prestige, and vigorously recruited him under his command, but Confucius distained to go with the stream and resigned.

In his thirties, Confucius visited Lao Zi whose thought of “The weak prevails” enlightened Confucius that imparting knowledge and cultivating people may be the best way for him, an unarmed person to change this world abiding by law of the jungle. Then he began to lecture in public, to teach disciples benevolence, morality, propriety, righteousness, loyalty and other philosophies in his mind, and how to become a moral, ambitious and dignified man of principle. His behaviors not only changed the status of education in the government, but also made himself become the first private educator in Chinese history.

Confucius’s greatest desire was to participate in political affairs directly to carry his dream into effect. When he was 50 years old, he eventually became the minister of justice of Lu State. During the meeting for alliance with powerful State of Qi, he confronted dangers calmly and induced the Prince Jing of Qi to put down that high lifted cup as a symbol of killing through peaceful songs sung by children and defenseless soldiers under his well-conceived plan when aware of troops in ambush and threat from slaughter……

On the other hand, it was also his scheme of “Demolition of Three Castles” that triggered the joint opposition of three families of Jisun, Shusun and Mengsun, a rebellion in consequence. While the cowardly prince of Lu State succumbed to pressures and indulged in wine and sex, Confucius felt hopeless and disappointed, so sent himself and his disciples into exile to start their journey of 14 years.

On their trip, misfortunes came to Confucius one after another. In Kuangdi, he was imprisoned and almost killed several times; in Pucheng, he was detained and shamefully broke his vows for escape. During his visit with Nan Zi, he felt incapable of corruption and debauchery of Wei State. Furthermore in Song State, he was chased by Sima Hengzhui and only ran away like a drowned mouse; in Zhengdi, he was nearly beaten by plague, and even on the border of Chen and Cai State, he was trapped in mountains without food for a few days. After all these bitterness, he was desperate to query the heaven: “I am not an evil person. Why I am put in such distressing circumstances?”…… Eventually, the Prince Zhao of Chu was willing to pay dear for him in pursuit of national prosperity, but when he arrived, the only thing he could see was the coffin of the prince……

In the past stormy life of 14 years, he wandered around such counties as Wei, Song, Zheng, Chen, Cai, Ye and Chu, etc., and went through hunger, hardship and pain of innumerous times to publicize his ideas to princes, but it turned out to be fruitless. Confucius fetched a deep sigh: “With my assistance in governing a state, everything will take shape in one year and three years must produce a remarkable success, but why, why it cannot be realized?”

At the age of 68, Confucius ended his journey and returned to Lu State. He concentrated on teaching and devoted himself to revising and compiling Chinese classics of ancient times, i.e. “Classic of Poetry”, “Classic of History”, “Classic of Changes”, “Classic of Rites” and “The Spring and Autumn Annuals”. Followed by quite a number of disciples, he became the greatest communicator of Chinese ancient culture and thoughts, but even so he hadn’t been trusted and favored by authorities of Lu State. His disciple, Ran Qiu who was lured by powers, surrendered to Ji’s family and disobeyed his teachings, which irritated and depressed Confucius......

In his old age, struck by the death of his only son, Kong Li and the accidental death of his beloved disciples Yan Hui and Zi Lu, Confucius was immersed in extreme sorrow and grief, lamenting whether he was in a blind alley. Before dying, he climbed up to the hillside and looked far into the distance where he seemed to see the one world in his heart.

B: Modern Story:

As a girl student born in the 1980s, Mei Yan came from an intellectual family. Brought up in an affluent family, she was well-educated and some proud. That she chose Confucius as her study object was simply because her American supervisor spoke highly of Confucius. She took it for granted that she could write a dissertation to the satisfaction of her supervisor in a short time.

The moment she returned from abroad, she kept to her room to focus on historical materials of Confucius without a stop. Duanmu, a reporter receiving her at the airport was one of the few people she could get in touch with, and also was the media for her to contact with the outer world, observe and understand the domestic society. In her opinion, Duanmu was not the civilized person she expected. On the one hand, he, as an active reporter, got involved in and reported various kinds of social news all day, and moreover he acquired a wide knowledge of Confucius and ancient culture. On the other hand, he dealt with all sorts of people in private and appeared at the cabaret or nightclub offering sensual pleasures or entertainment. It seemed that he conducted some scandalous secret deals, which made Mei Yan confused, bewildered or even contemptuous.

As days passed by, she had a gradual understanding of Confucius’s life with further inquiry about materials. She was conscious of the whole life of Confucius was not simple as she imaged but a moving story full of frustration, sorrow and joy which sparked out brilliant light of dream. Meanwhile, she deeply felt that she could not entirely know the life and ideas of Confucius in such a short time. Besides, through Apotheosis of two thousand years, the figure of Confucius had been deified and distorted severely. Maybe the truth of history and the real pain, happiness, desperation and hope inside of Confucius had been concealed by times.

The relation between Mei Yan and Duanmu was also changing from estrangement and hostility incurred by misunderstanding at first to understanding and familiarity. Thus Mei Yan discovered the secret of Duanmu that a group of urban youths established a organization of “Zigong Foundation” to build up a Hope Primary School for children in the poor mountain village by means of fund-raising and donation time after time and year-by-year rushing about and efforts behind the scenes, while Duanmu who seemed frivolous was the very leader of this group of young volunteers.

Mei Yan got to know the spirit of Confucius was still alive today. His persistence pursuit of belief and his ideas of people-orientation, humanity, benevolent rules and filial piety, etc. laid a foundation for Chinese traditional virtues, and were worthy of adhering today.

On the day when Hope Primary School opened, Mei Yan saw children salute to the Five-star Red Flag under the blue sky on the side of hill, and said to Duanmu she would change the title of dissertation to Spirit of Confucius and Contemporary China, and would commit all her life to research and study Confucius……

Draw the whole life of Confucius with an objective, rigorous, minute stroke to reflect main ideas of Confucius, discuss in details the value of Confucius’s ideas in modern society, find new concerted spiritual home out of fickleness, emptiness, loss and confusion and go after the spiritual transcendence and salvation at a high level. Such are the pursuit and aim of this play.
