The story took place in Shanghai in the mid 1980s. Sun Yuxin was admitted to Peking University. But right before Yuxin boarded for Beijing, her mother was killed in a traffic accident, leaving behind three more kids, who were actually adopted by Yuxin’s mother while she was working as a prison officer. To take care of her little brother and sisters, Yuxin gave up college, stayed in Shanghai and took part time jobs. Tian Feng, Yuxin’s classmate who were also admitted by Peking University, had promised before he left for Beijing that he would share the happiness and pain with Yuxin Together for the rest of their lives. In order to set him free from his promise, Yuxin cut off contact with Tian Feng. Several years later, Tian Feng went abroad with a scholarship, while Yuxin worked as an apprentice in a small sewing store. Yuxin later married the son of her master, but the couple soon got divorced. A decade went by. Yuxin’s brother and two sisters grew up. The older sister Yuyue, who became a teacher after graduation from college, got a boyfriend named Long Haifan who was a reporter of a magazine. Yuyuan, the younger sister who was still in college, was in love with a soccer player named Luo Ning who was from a rich family. The little brother Yule, failing the college entrance exam for two consecutive years, finally entered his favorite University. Dashu, Yuxin’s high school classmate who had helped Yuxin for years, was hoping that Yuxin would accept his love. Yuxin however, failed her first marriage, was not sure if she should marry this kind and generous man. Unexpected troubles took place while the family was on its track to a better future. Yuyue’s reporter boyfriend found out the secret about the family where Yuyue, Yuyuan and Yule were actually the children of three criminals. Despite Yuyue’s objection, he puts the story in the magazine, leading the family onto a rough road. Tian Feng, returned from abroad with his wife, Cheng Lin, who was his classmate in U.S. as well as the daughter of his parents’ friend, came across Yuxin and found out what she had suffered for all these years. Parents of Luo Ning, the sports star, believed that having an affair with a criminal’s daughter would bring misfortune to their son and thus banned him from seeing Yuhuan. Yuhuan, broke up with Luo Ning, started hunting around for her father for revenge as it was her dad who had turned her mother into a criminal. Yule visited his own dad who refused to accept him as his son, and became suffered from autism. Also broke up with her boyfriend, Yuyue refused her father who wanted to take her back as his daughter, and gave him nothing but scorn and censure. Tian Feng offered great help to Yuxin to solve her brother and sisters’ problems. Meanwhile, love sparkles in their hearts. The two old lovers tightly held on to themselves, trying not to hurt Peng Dashu and Cheng Lin. Yuhuan’s hunting lead her to the fact that her father, Liu Jianchuan, was the one who had killed her adoptive mother in the traffic accident. Liu Jianchuan was at first determined to kill his daughter, Yuhuan, who was about to report him to the police, but later committed suicide. Cheng Lin and Dashu showed great sympathy to Yuxin, and sincerely hoped that Yuxin would think for herself for once after sacrificing for her brother and sisters for so many years. Chen Lin decided to divorce Tian Feng and go back to UK while Dashu cancelled his wedding with Yuxin. Yuxin and Tian Feng, suddenly realized that they had ignored the people who loved them so much while being occupied with their own business, decided to remain as friends to each other. Dashu submitted an application to teach in Xinjiang Province. Before he left, Yuxin told Dashu that since he had waited for her for so many years, she would wait for him for return. Meanwhile, her brother and sisters all obtained new hope in their lives. Everyday, Yuxin watered the tree that signified the love of her family as well as her yearning for Dashu. With Tian Feng’s help, Yuxin successfully promoted the sportswear brand“The Tree of Family”. She hoped that she and Dashu could hold the wedding at the press conference.
