And an Australian Film Comes to the World!
In January 1980 some of the greatest musical talents from America, Japan, England, Europe, New Zealand and Australia assembled together for the now historic 1st Sydney International Music Festival.
With this almost unbelievable lineup of musical talents Sydney joined Montréal, Berlin, Newport and Tokyo as one of the greatest International Music Festival cities in the world.
The Festival, which lasted six nights, became a musical event never to be repeated and was brilliantly captured for all time as feature length film called "Southern Crossing".
The magnificent line-up of artists appearing in "Southern Crossing" are; The Dave Brubeck Quartet, Herbie Mann and The Family of Mann, The Les McCann Band, Howie Smith and the Jazz Co-op, The Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big Band of Australian All Stars, Galapagos Duck, Judy Bailey Quintet with John Sangster, Ricky May and Friends and The Young Northside Big Band.
"Southern Crossing" is a 92 minute feature length documentary style movie representing an adventure into the world of contemporary jazz music which combines well selected performances of general interest, jazz pieces are combined with brilliant photography and sound. Emphasis is placed on the live concert together with wonderful location shots, which include some of the most spectacular surfing ever filmed.
