Tongli, an ancient town, situated in Jiangsu Province，east China, has the unique rivers and lakes in town. Tongli is reputed as the Oriental Venice. Surrounded by water, Tongli is inlaid in the area of five lakes, therefore has abundant small bridges. The town is divided into seven islands by 15 small rivers while the 49 ancient bridges link them up. Many buildings are constructed beside water. It is the best-preserved ancient watery town in Jiangsu Province, and a key cultural relic site under the protection of the province. In 1995, it was listed by the provincial government as one of the first batch famous historical and cultural towns.

Tongli is famous for its large number of architectures built in the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, as well as historical famous people. It has attracted not only several millions of tourists, but also the large quantities of film and production units during the past ten years. In 1983, Xie Tieli with his production unit, 'Father and Son of the Bao’s', first stepped into the town, which was introduced by the Culture Ministry of China. After the first showing of that film in Suzhou, the plain small town, the tranquil deep dwelling and the long stone road gave deep impression to many audiences. From then on, Tongli has the indissoluble bond with movie and become one of “the Chinese Top Ten Shooting Bases”.
