Plot Outline:

In the city of Deng Zhou lived an affluent family of the name Xue. Before the marriage of their daughter Xue Xiang Ling, the mother gave her a unicorn purse filled with pearls and jewels. On her wedding day, she encountered a great rainstorm. She took shelter in the Pavilion of Spring and Autumn, where she saw the wedding carriage of a poor woman named Zhao Shou Zhen. The woman exclaimed that her life is miserable and began to cry. Xue Xiang Ling learned the reason and was suddenly overcome with sympathy. Xue Xiang Ling gave to Zhao Shou Zhen the unicorn purse. As the rainclouds broke, the two women parted. Six years later, Deng Zhou experienced a flood, and Xue Xiang Ling was separated from her family. She wandered alone and destitute until she arrived at the prefecture of Tian Lai. She encountered her former servant, Mother Hu, who introduced her to the family of the official Lu, where she could work as a servant. Xue Xiang Ling cared for the son of the official, Tian Lin. One day, Tian Lin threw a ball into a small tower and ordered Xue Xiang Ling to retrieve it. Inside the tower, she saw the unicorn purse she had been given by her mother. She could not help but cry. Lady Lu turned out to be Zhao Shou Zhen. Lady Lu discovered that this servant, Xue Xiang Ling is the woman who gave her the gift, to whom she owes a great debt of gratitude. Lady Lu received her as a sister, reuniting the family.
