Mattie, thirty-something, endures an uneventful life; she lacks purpose and direction. Her position at "The Fresno Media Group", a family-owned public relations firm, provides no satisfaction. One day, she is summoned to a lawyers's office and given a videotape made by her grandfather ---- Nobel Prize winning physicist and famous "crackpot", Raff Buddemeyer. Somehow sensing his imminent death, he records the message solely for Mattie.
Buddemeyer's death ,according to his unorthodox theories of a multidimensional holoflux universe, is no barrier to continuing their relationship and he promises to assist her wherever she is in need. His puzzling message triggers a series of mental seizures marked by hallucinatory episodes that quickly disrupts Mattie's life. At work, she becomes involved in a bizarre media manipulation plot, hatched by her father and uncle, to rescue the reputation of the firm's top client, Phoebe Lynn Slidell ---- former beauty queen; talk show host; business entrepreneur and exploiter of third world labor. Mattie's downward spiral eventually lands her in jail on a murder conspiracy charge, when Phoebe Lynn is assassinated in revenge for her involvement in a horrific Eastern European industrial accident. As she waits in her dark prison cell, Mattie is presented with an unexpected solution to her problems ---- if she can follow the "path" provided by her late grandfather Raff. Somewhere in the multi-dimensional holoflux universe lies her salvation and freedom.
