The Preface of Men Ain’t No Bad This is a groundbreaking work – a “fortress demolishing” novel after Besieged Fortress – which possesses Lawrence’s sensuality as well as Duras’ perplexity, astonishing and unorthodox. People in China were baffled by the concept of Fortress but nowadays they find the walls of the fortress have long been torn down. Men and women promenading in and out of this unwalled city are reveling in their urban lives full of lust and desire while lingering on the fresh and serenity of the outskirts. The question is: Without those walls, where does our soul reside? If men and women are equal, how are they supposed to tie the knot of love? Traditional Chinese society during agricultural times arguably enjoyed high degree of harmony. The so-called “three cardinal guides and five constant virtues” were moral codes which regulated each person’s role and behavior in society and on which Chinese civilization has thrived for thousands of years. It is those ethical standards that has always brought Chinese society back on track and helped it preserve the humanity system in the wake of dynastic shifts and invasions from outsiders. However, this is just the opposite of today’s democratic countries where “sovereignty belongs to the people”, because the concept of “God created us equal” is not embedded in our bones. Perhaps, sexual equality between men and women could set the foundation for equality in everything else. The author set out to tell a story of a private life as if its topic was on a love affair. In actuality, the real issue he addresses in this novel is about personal rights, particularly the rights entitled to both men and women. Men cannot brag about their affairs any more nor can women conceal their needs in the name of love. Just like impressionists appreciate the transiency and fluidity of light, beauty comes along for a moment while everybody wants to get hold of it. It is when we can no longer manipulate others’ lives in the name of love that the emancipation of our national individualism will arise. An atheist nation looks like a premature child on every level. This novel has been published by Xian Dai Publishing House in August 2008, and also circulated on major portal websites like Sohu, Tencent, Sina, etc.
