Synopsis (电影版的情节):
Having lived as an ascetic on Emei Shan for one thousand years, White Snake, now incarnated as Bai Suzhen and joined by her Qing Maiden, travels to the West Lake, where they unexpectedly encounter Xu Xian on his way back from a visit to his mother’s tomb. After this unexpected and fortunate encounter, Xu Xian and Bai Suzhen are married and live as a happy and beautiful couple. The monk Fahai endeavors to sow discord between the two with rumors concerning Bai Suzhen, and Xu Xian believes what Fahai has to say. During the Dragon Boat Festival, Xu Xian causes Bai Suzhen to become drunk with realgar wine, whereupon she then reveals her snake form, terrifying Xu Xian to death. After becoming sober, Bai Suzhen ascends the mountain of immortals to collect the precious herb Lingzhi, which she then uses to save Xu Xian’s life. Having recovered, Xu Xian is once again lured away by Fahai, this time up to Golden Mountain. Bai Suzhen, accompanied by Qing Maiden, ascends the mountain to search for her husband, but Fahai refuses to release him. Bai Suzhen is compelled to use force to fight back, and a large battle ensues in the Temple of Golden Mountain. Xu Xian escapes from the temple, and finds Bai Suzhen near the Broken Bridge of the West Lake. Bai Suzhen forgives Xu Xian for his doubts, and the couple once again live joyfully together in the home of Xu Xian’s older sister. Fahai returns, again with hostile intentions. He imprisons Bai Suzhen in the Thunder Peak Pagoda, but as a result of Bai Suzhen’s diligent accumulation of good karma, she is able to overturn the Pagoda and escape triumphantly.
