This story happened in the spring of 1927. The richest man in Lishu county in south of Yangtze River, Mr. Xing married a concubine named Lanqing (in ancient China, man can marry several women) who was as beautiful as goddess. But in the night of their wedding ceremony, Mr. Xing was murdered. This crime was considered to be a serious one and was paid highly attention to.

Wenkang, the famous detective in Shanghai was sent to Lishu County to make specific investigations. When he met the suspect Lanqing he was shocked because she was his close friend in childhood.

After analyzing the details of the case, Wenkang thought the most important thing at that moment was to make clear Lanqing's life experience. Where is her from and who introduced her to Mr. Xing? The captain, Zhongyi, told Wenkang that Lanqing was the niece of the Boss of a local rice shop and it was the boss, Tong, brought her to Xing.

Mr. Xing had three wives and two sons who were all interested in the secret of treasure, so they tried every effort to get any clues from each other. They two sons started to fight for the inheritance. At that time, things were in a great mass.

Zheng Xiaocong and Zhongyi were sweethearts from childhood. Zheng Xiaocong was the daughter of police chief in Lishu County, while Zhongyi was a detective. Zheng Xiaocong was a beautiful and clever girl with the special quality of new woman in the early 1920's. She fell in love with Wenkang at the first sight, so when they did some investigation about the case, she was always with them and she saved Wenkang many times by her special identification. The triangle love is bitter to all of them. Wenkang escaped Zheng Xiaocong intentionally.

Wenkang found the common reason for the death of his father and Mr. Xing was a map of a gold mine in the south of Yangtze Rive. Many years ago, Japanese financial group employed Wenkang's father to do some geological exploration, but out of expectation, Wenkang's father found gold mine and he did not want it known by the Japanese. He refused to give them the map and was killed by them. Mr. Xing was also murdered by some unidentified people.

In the end, Heavy fog dispersed. Wenkang and Zheng Xiaocong found out the murderer and also got the map of gold mine. Wenkang wanted to go back Shanghai. At the moment of farewell, Zhongyi wished him and Xiaozong live a happy life in the future. But Wenkang told Zhongyi he would never marry Zheng Xiaocong if he was in the world. Zhongyi said he was cursing him. But Wenkang told him they all would never die because they needed to protect their country.

At that moment, several Japanese was approaching. They thread the three young persons to give them the map. In order to secure Wenkang and Zheng Xiaocong, Zhongyi was shot by the Japanese. Before a raging fire, Wenkang threw the map into the fire slowly. Zheng Xiaocong asked the reason, and Wenkang told her "I believe, if the gold mine exists in the land of China, our off-springs surely can find it some day. It belongs to China forever. "
