After their graduation from college, Cheng Zhang and Han Meng, the couple of happy lovers, live in their respective dormitory. They have a private date each day off duty, which has to depend on whether Cheng Zhang’s roommate is in or not, because Cheng Zhang shares a room with three others, where they have no choice but to cast sheep's eyes at each other. To get a house of their own, they are determined to get married. After that, however, unexpected troubles crop up successively: they miss the bus to hospital for physical examination; and then they ride a bicycle, whose chain is so loose as to run off gears from time to time; they go to a wrong hospital（they have to go to the named hospital at that times）, to say nothing of the fact that Cheng Zhang is beaten black and blue owing to jumping a queue; being afraid to lose the opportunity to get the assigned house, they have to take photos for the marriage, but they take wrong seats (according to Chinese custom, male should take the left seat while female the right one.); They buy nothing but a piece of carpet which turns out to be second-hand; hoping to have a solemn wedding ceremony, they hold it in a restaurant but find fish stinking…… Luckily, they manage to go it through with friends’ help. The visitors to the new house are joking, “Where are your bed?” “Do you think we need a bed?” Cheng Zhang answered, pointing at the shrunk carpet. All of them burst into laughter, “Right! The new house is just such a big bed!”
That is the first year they get hitched.
The second year, they have a baby……
The third year, their mothers come and help to look after their baby……
The fourth year, they are laid off……
The fifth year, they do business and something happens ……
The sixth year, they are well off ……
The seventh year, Cheng Zhang falls in love with another woman…….
The eighth year, they live separately for lack of experience and calm facing such a trouble……
The ninth year, they are bankrupt……
The tenth year, they get reunited in the building to be pulled down, where they lived a happy and romantic life.
Since their wedding, ten years has passed before they know it. They take a calm, frank and enjoyable attitude toward the other, their house, the society and their future.
Life is a journey to grow up for a man, at the beginning of which he is educated, of which the rest is a real process to grow up. Ten ages from wedding is the most crucial and dramatic, during which everyone fails to dodge setbacks and obstacles. As a matter of fact, it is all kinds of troubles that make a man mature. Especially, the last ten years of the twentieth century facilitates their traditional thinking mode to change and helps them to know how to treat themselves, others and the society.
