A graduate student Liang Zhiyuan encounters Xu Xiaoman when he is newly employed, which derives an impressive love story full of twists and turns.

Liang Zhiyuan, a promising successor in the leader’s eyes, with high academic qualifications, arrogant and egg headed, pursues idealism toward life. Xu Xiaoman, young and pretty, is mature beyond her years and sophisticated compared with Liang Zhiyuan. When they are in love, Conflicts and contradictions break out constantly owing to their incompatible personality and thoughts. As a consequence, they go their separated ways. However, the love interwoven with hate tortures them with anguish.

At this moment, a guileless girl named Qin Mei breaks into Liang Zhiyuan’s life. They get steady with each other in a short time and then get married. Disappointed, Xu Xiaoman marries a young customs officer Zhu Tao. However, she is still very attached to Liang Zhiyuan in the depth of her heart.

The life after marriage throws Liang Zhiyuan to an abyss full of anguish. It’s really a pain in the neck when comes to the financial difficulties, crowded living conditions and his wife’s miserly manner. New contradictions crop up after the birth of his son Duoduo. Facing the issue of child’s schooling and wife’s work, he becomes sober.

Though in a favorable material basis, Xu Xiaoman and Zhutao don’t have a happy marriage. Xu Xiaoman gets tired of this tedious life. Reflecting on her life, she find she virtually lose a great deal.

At the same time, each of them has a certain social standing and family. So they are trying to conceal their feelings but attached with each other in the cockles of the heart.

Luo Qingshui, the best colleague friend of Liang Zhiyuan, suddenly find himself in a rut on his due for retirement and give up his seemingly harmonious marriage life. To everyone’s great surprise, he goes back to his born countryside and harvests his true love and career. This deeply stirs Liang Zhiyuan.

Tremendous changes come over Xu Xiaoman’s life. On account of financial problems, Zhu Tao is under investigation by the procuratorial organs. On the contrary, Liang Zhiyuan stepped on the top position. Hovering between love and career, he faces painful choices. To his surprise, Xu Xiaoman refuses him on the point of his planning to resume their old love. Under the great pressure of family responsibility, ethic and other factors, she makes her choice at last in a rainy night. Quietly, she leaves the city that warms and hurts her.

Luo Qingshui passed away suddenly, however, in the countryside, he feels happy and satisfied with his true love. As for Liang Zhiyuan, he is a chief of a bureau now. In retrospect and reflect of his feeling experience and his life, he couldn’t refrain his feelings on Luo Qingshui’s funeral.
