Part One

In the remote Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, there is a holy and pure land, where snow mountains stand in great numbers, swamps densely spread over, where all birds and beasts take it as the paradise and human beings consider it as the fairy land wait to be discovered. People call it as the Sources of the Three Rivers. For thousands of years, the first stream of three rives, Yellow River, the mother river of the Chinese nation, Yangtze River, the longest river in China, and Lancang River, the international river that springs from China, flowing through Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, is hiding in them silently, unknown to outsiders. Where are they? We are still crazy about it at present.

In order to find the secrets of the sources of three rives, a comprehensive study team penetrated into the backland of the source region and started their 40 days’ lonely journey.

Part Two

Yellow River is the mother river of the Chinese nation. Among various standards of sources of rivers, controversies about the Yellow River are the most. Should we respect the history or the science? Every expert holds to his or her own statement. The final significance is to let all people have a comprehensive understanding of the source of great rivers. People expect to know the truth in dispute.

The journey to find the source of Lancang River is the most difficult. Over the long course of history, the source of Lancang River had been covered by thick cloud and mist. People indicated the approximate location of the source of Lancang River till the turn of the century. Where can the study team of sources of rivers reach?

Part Three

Among the sources of three rivers, the source of Lancang River bears the least controversy. It is not because is fits for all experts’ standards, but because it is very hard to seek its source. The source of Lancang River has a great many branches, which even Yangtze River can hardly compare with. In source regions of Lancang River, there are nearly four hundred tributaries in all shapes and sizes, which become the natural barriers of the study team to investigate the source of Lancan.

Yangtze River is the longest river in China. People take it for granted that they’ve known much about the river, thus there is no any other secret about the river. But, in fact, people have fallen into an error about the source of Yangtze River for over 2000 years. And no one has seen the real source of Yangtze River till the mid-nineteen century.

Part Four

For thousands of years, people’s feelings for Yangtze River, the longest river in China, stand comparison with that for Yellow River. It is also the mother river of China. And the hardships that the study team meets in the journey to Yangtze River are no less than that of Lancang River. The vast areas in its source region might be unique in this world.

The journey to find the source of Yangtze River almost runs through the Science Study of China. Starting from Great Yu controlled the great flood, to Xu Xiake’s geographic adventure, people got to the real source of Yangtze River, beautiful Geladandong (in the middle of Tibet ), until the seventies of last century. The Tuotuo River, Geladandong Snow Mountain, and Jinaggendiru Glacier are names that are renowned for the sources of Yangtze River by the present people. But, where is the real source of Yangtze River? Thirty years ago, the explorers that found the first drop of water of Yangtze River at the foot of Jinaggendiru Glacier are still admirable. Nevertheless, admirations can’t stop people’s quest for truth. As yet controversy about the source of Yangtze River still continues.
