Israel's 'Tehilim' tops Tokyo Filmex

Nadjari's drama wins grand prize

TOKYO -- The Tokyo Filmex jury has awarded the competition grand prize to Raphael Nadjari's "Tehilim," a drama about an Israeli family's struggles following the father's mysterious disappearance.

Helmer Nadjari received a ¥1 million ($9,260) cash prize with the award on Sunday evening. Pic also screened in competition at Cannes this year.

The jury's Kodak vision award went to Hong Kong helmer Yau Nai-hoi's cop thriller "Eye in the Sky." Yau also received Kodak film worth $8,000.

Hong Kong helmer Johnnie To's gang pic "Exiled" won the Agnes B. audience award, together with $1,850.

Jury was headed by Korean helmer Lee Chang-dong, whose pic "Secret Sunshine" closed the fest. Other jury members were lenser Yutaka Yamazaki, helmer Isao Yukisada, journalist and filmmaker Dorothee Wenner and Cannes programmer Christian Jeune.

The nine-day Tokyo Filmex featured a 10-pic competition for emerging Asian filmmakers and a 10-film Special Screening section devoted to indie auteurs, as well as retrospective sections dedicated to Japanese helmer Satsuo Yamamoto and Indian helmer Ritwik Ghatak.
