Samantha Who? star undergoes successful double mastectomy, says she is "100 percent clear and clean."

Just a few weeks ago, Christina Applegate's publicist released a statement to the media with some scary news: The 36-year-old actress and Emmy-nominated star of ABC's Samantha Who? had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

However, the cancer was discovered at an early stage and the actress was expected to make a full recovery.

Now, Applegate has spoken publicly for the first time since discovering her ailment, and she says all is going well. Speaking with ABC's Good Morning America, Applegate revealed that she is cancer-free and is doing fine after a double mastectomy. Doctors only found one breast cancerous, but Applegate decided she wanted to make sure there was no chance to be diagnosed with it again.

"My decision, after looking at all the treatment plans that were possibilities for me, the only one that seemed the most logical and the one that was going to work for me was to have a bilateral mastectomy," Applegate told Good Morning America's Robin Roberts. She continued, "I didn't want to go back to the doctors every four months for testing and squishing and everything. I just wanted to kind of get rid of this whole thing for me. This was the choice that I made and it was a tough one."

Applegate says that early detection was the key to her survival, and she is now putting together a program to help other women get early detection and the proper treatment. She's spearheading a project to help other high-risk women--those who have a history of breast cancer in their family--get the MRIs and tests they need.

The ordeal over, Applegate can now breathe a sigh of relief and get back to what she does best: comedy.

The optimistic actress joked, "I'm going to have cute boobs till I'm 90."
